Responsibility for the majority of passenger rail services in South Africa lies with the state-owned enterprise known as the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). PRASA consists of four branches: Metrorail, which handles commuter rail services in urban areas; Shosholoza Meyl, responsible for regional and intercity rail services; Autopax, which manages regional and intercity coach services; and Intersite, in charge of PRASA-owned properties.
